Breaking the Barrier: Plastic Surgery for Men

Most often, plastic surgery is associated with women. Perhaps because they are perceived to be more conscious of their appearance than men. Men, maybe as a result, may be hesitant to enlist the services of a cosmetic surgeon because the idea of having a something done for aesthetic reasons might appear vain.

But all that might be changing. Men are seeing real benefits from plastic surgery, helped along by viral marketing buzz courtesy of celebrities.

Aging men, for example, are prone to getting ‘turkey gobbler’ necks that are next to impossible to firm up without going under the knife. Neck lifts, along with facelifts for sagging jowls, can do wonders in this problem area, and the difference between the ‘before’ and ‘after’ is the difference between looking old and young.

There are medical conditions that afflict males that can only be helped by plastic surgery. Gynecomastia, or the enlargement of male breasts, is a very real issue among self-conscious men. No amount of pectoral exercise can siphon off excess fat in the chest area; only surgery can correct it.

Operations in are also becoming a necessity when deformities in the tissues and muscles surrounding the eyes interfere with vision. Certain eyelid muscles, for example, weaken as the person ages. This causes the eyelid to roll inward towards the eye, rubbing against the eye and resulting to irritation, redness, and sensitivity to light and wind, among other discomforts. To correct this mechanical problem, incisions can be done to tighten the eyelid and bring it and the muscles involved to their normal position, while there are also non-incision repairs using sutures to avert the eyelid.

Some procedures are for health and appearance reasons. Crunches and diet can sculpt terrific abs, but for men who have lost a significant amount of fat, there is always the remaining fold in the stomach that would be hard to melt off by exercise and diet alone. To snip off this tongue of skin, tummy tucks can be performed.

Of course there are plastic surgery jobs that are primarily aesthetic. Aside from neck lifts, male clients may avail of facelifts and brow lifts, Botox injections, dermal fillers, and even laser treatments and light therapy for better looking skin and a more youthful overall appearance.
